Day 1: Read this First

Thanks for joining me on my journey as I chronicle the highs and lows of starting a new digital business! A few rules:

  1. Start with $1000.00, and see how far it can get me. I will keep track of all business-related expenses and can share on a weekly / monthly basis
  2. Caveat – expenses don’t include any personal expenses (e.g. mortgage, utilities, food etc.); only those that are directly related to this new business
  3. Revenue does not include any income I earn outside of this venture. This includes any W2 compensation, outside consulting, or other businesses. Only revenue that’s generated from this business will be counted
  4. That’s it!

So what type of business am I thinking about??? Historically I have launched ecommerce-based businesses selling various products, from clothing to men’s grooming products to humidifiers. But this time will be different. This time the product is:

MYSELF

Let me explain.

One of the biggest challenges with running a product-based ecom business, is the management of inventory. It is cash-sucking and expensive to both buy and hold (especially with today’s interest rates). So the natural evolution of my journey is to explore digital products based on my knowledge gained over my 20 years in the space. Knowledge is very light…and the margins can be great 🙂

My initial thought is to give this knowledge away for ‘free’ for a period of time while I build a decent-sized audience, create a community where the best and honest ideas are shared, and once we hit some level of critical mass, consider ways we can monetize. I will walk you through my mindset of the pros / cons of ways to do so, and the potential of timing. And I hope you can help me along the way!

So, today is DAY 1, and I’ve already spent some money:

  • WordPress Premium: $96 for annual subscription
  • GoDaddy domain: $12.17 for one year
  • Total: $108.17
  • Cash Balance: $891.83

As you can tell, my website is a work in progress. But it is good for you to see the unfinished product, and how it shapes over time. This ain’t overnight stuff! It’s real, and takes work.
