Typically I try to put a plan in place the beginning of the week, so that I have some small goals to shoot for by Friday. Small wins give you confidence, and you can keep building on that week after week – and before you know it, you just climbed up that mountain that seemed so daunting at the bottom.
So for this week, I need to:
- Invite some friends and co-workers to the Circle forum to get things going and get some feedback
- Publish my first LinkedIn post, announcing my plans to start this new business
- Continue to post small insights, possibly every other day
- Gain 20-50 subscribers by week’s end
Once I get some feedback and interaction with the general public, that will inform how I can iterate and optimize, both the blog and the forum.
CONSISTENCY. That is the name of the content game. As long as I stay committed and consistent in generating useful content to the world, there should be some traction over time. The tendency will be to get discouraged after a few days, few weeks, few months (?), and then get tempted to quit too soon. That’s why the small goals of progress are so important. Can’t ‘boil the ocean’, as they say.
Note that the tools that I have used have been pretty inexpensive, and has required zero development or outside help. It just takes a little bit of Google searching to find the right solutions out there, as well as to figure out how to set things up. I may have somewhat of a technical bent, but by no means do I have a technical or engineering background; I had degrees in Marketing and Entrepreneurial Management, and my career has been along those lines. It just takes a bit of resourcefulness and tinkering here and there — you have to put in the work!
